Spyros studied Geology at Patras University, Greece and completed a Ph.D. at Freie Universtität Berlin (FU-Berlin, Germany), studying bio-stratigraphy and evolution of deep water clastics (western Greece flysch sequences) and making world-wide correlations.
Between 1993 and 2001 he lectured at the Geoscience Dept. of FU-Berlin and carried out applied research on sequence stratigraphy and sedimentary basin evolution focusing in the Mediterranean Sea (International Continental Drilling Project ICDP, on-shore Crete Island, Peloponnesus, participating in various oceanographic cruises), Poland, Spain and in UAE with BG. Postdoctoral Fellow of IKY (State Scholarships Foundation) in 2001 to 2002 at the Hellenic Center of Marine Research (HCRM). Since 2003 worked as senior geoscientist in QC at the Central Laboratory of Public Works, Geo-Engineering Dept. in Athens, while lecturing applied geology in under- and post-graduate level at various Universities (Aegean, Patras, Ioannina, ASPETE).
Since 2011 became a key player in the hydrocarbons working group (Ministry of Environment & Energy, Upstream: Hydrocarbons Directorate), Member and negotiator in various Evaluation Committees for Licensing, Oil & Gas Expert of the EFG and since October 2016 he has been appointed the position of Vice President of the Hellenic Hydrocarbons Resources Management SA (HHRM SA).
